Along national highway no. 9, it is like an entrance to this castle town located along Dangu river where ducks and Koi swim. On the first floor is a product shop handling products from all over Yamaguchi such as fishery processed goods, sweets and local sake. On the second floor is a restaurant "Fuku no Seki".
At the entrance are many maps and brochures of Chofu so please do drop by.

Inside the shop, with its natural light shining through the big window, it is bright like a sun room. There are many selected items of hand made warmth and story to tell including delicious products and items you will feel happy holding in your hands, made in Shimonoseki, Yamaguchi.
A small plate lunch offering seasonal foodstuffs is very popular at the cafe. "Deseeru Miyoshi", a cake shop loved by locals is right next door. -

Milk glass dishes and silver cutlery, a one off clock and a chandelier. These masterpieces polished through the ages are so attractive that you will forget the time.
At the back of the shop is a tea room overlooking abundance of greenery where you can casually enjoy lunch and tea time. Chef's recommendation is the Bagel lunch (1200 - 1250yen)

A residence built by Mototoshi Mouri, the 14th head of Chofu, Mouri family. In the main building of 150 tsubo, there are 22 rooms of various sizes and you can enjoy the difference between a transom window and a nail cover. Drink maccha as you sit on a veranda as you lovingly watch the Japanese garden for every season and wild flowers arranged daily. There is a kimono section so we recommend that you have a photograph taken wearing a kimono. (Entrance Fee 200 yen/Elementary and Junior High School students 100 yen)

This is a market which opened right after the war and some stores have their second generation shopkeeper taking helm. There is nostalgia with friendliness with people chatting and traces of the old days. A fish shop, a greengrocer, meat shop and a flower shop. There are many products that you can eat straight away including croquette and sashimi.
You can use the rest area with self serve coffee free of charge.

A sweet shop frequented by a wide generation of customers from the local elderly to students. Rotating Yaki "Daimyo", similar to a Tako Yaki, is our no. 1 recommendation with just only 100 yen. You can buy soft ice cream from only 150 yen.
There are many selections of food that you can eat casually and that is affordable, so much so that you will have a hard time deciding.
You can eat sitting on a bench just outside the store or inside.

If you go through the symbolic "Pusan Gate", an area where stores selling Korean groceries and restaurants including yakiniku restaurants open shop appear. At "Sorinamu", where you can enjoy Korean lunch, tea and dessert, you can also try on "Chimachogori", a colorful and gorgeous Korean costume (1500 yen).

Seafood bowl that a fish store makes
The moment you step inside the store, a display full of fresh seafood greets you ! The back of the store is an eatery and at lunch time they offer seafood bowl (1000 yen excluding tax) with seafood that change daily. The dishes are all big serve and the menu has a variety of meals to choose from, so not only locals but many tourists come here as well. At night, it becomes an Izakaya and sashimi, blowfish sashimi and sea urchin are popular.
A natural school eatery of gentle taste that you would want to come again and again
A former ryokan was renovated to make a healthy eatery. Lunch changes weekly with a choice of "Omakase Rice" (880 yen) or "Omakase Pasta" (900 yen).
All dishes are free of animal foodstuffs including meat, fish, egg and dairy products and are made using additive free seasonings. The desserts are also hand-made and "Parfait with Orange Agar Jelly and Soy Milk Cream" (market price) is to die for!

A cafe specializing in tea, selling 20 varieties of Taiwanese tea purchased locally and herb tea. You can enjoy tea time with "Gonfu Tea" or "Gaiwan" which is a Taiwanese way of drinking by lining up many small tea ware and spending a relaxing time by experiencing the deepness of tea.
Lunch and desserts are also popular and they also sell original blend tea.

From daily goods such as stationary and dishes to bags and accessories, there are many interior goods chosen from the viewpoint of "simplicity, functional beauty and quality". The items are sought from all over Japan, not being fussy about its place of manufacture.
While finding your favorite item, it is also fun hearing about the charm of each item and its story behind the making. The store is on the second floor and first and third floor is used to hold irregular events.

Let's walk across Honshu and Kyushu
If you go underground using an elevator, an underwater tunnel of 780 meters in length appears. At the entrance and the exit, a tourist information panel of both Shimonoseki and Kitakyushu can be found and on the walls of the tunnel are drawings of fishes and jellyfish swimming the sea.
It takes about 15 minutes to walk across and you can see local people using it daily for their daily walk etc. Bicycles have to be pushed by hand (toll 20 yen).

The northern most shrine in Kyushu overlooking the strait
The shrine enshrined at the most northern tip of Kyushu was founded in the year 200 AD. Located at a place where you look up to see the Kanmon bridge, the scenery of the strait seen from the front of the compounds and the steam whistle and the sound of the sea you hear have been chosen as "100 soundscapes of Japan". Having "Hime Ookami", believed to be the god of sea transportation safety, as the first seat of the enshrined deity, it leads to the divine favor of visitor's wonderful trip and proper guidance. The blowfish fortune slip is very popular.
Questioning the good old Japanese idea, the beauty of "Pause"
The main building where once the Miyaji family from the Mekari shrine used to live, now open to the public as a gallery. In a space where walls and pillars built 70 years ago are still utilized as is, beautiful artworks of "food, clothing and shelter" that are refined, warm yet simple are displayed. The chief of this gallery wants people to "spend a quiet, slow time" in a space where there is comfortable "Pause". You can drop by casually and use it as a shrine waiting room.

Shopping district of long standing

Long standing stores of 60 years and new stores coexist in an alley that is thin and long, like an eel. Next to a greengrocer and a fresh fish shop run by grandpas and grandmas, there are stores utilizing empty stores including a cafe, a baker and an old book store and it is bustling with activity again. Please pay attention to the hand-written messages and old photos dangling from the arcade ceiling.

A high class Japanese restaurant built in 1931 and prospered as a social gathering place of business people and intellectuals. Overcoming the crisis of going out of business and demolition, it is currently managed by Kitakyushu city. Anyone can visit freely and a volunteer guide will show you around the building.
There are 40 varieties of designs that color the space. This is a place where you can feel the remaining scent of the gorgeous era including a room which has a sweeping view of the Kanmon strait and a hall equipped with a stage.
At "Sankirou Saryo" diner you can enjoy lunch and course menu including Fuku (blowfish). (Booking recommended)

search for general goods and cafes
A former shipping company building built around 1930. Currently, on each floor are general goods stores and cafes. Stores with personality are gathered and many exude atelier style atmosphere with the artist him/herself standing at the shop front. The stairs, hallways and window frames are pretty much the way it was when it was built, hence its charm is its retro modern atmosphere.
The color of the outer wall differs between the front and the back of the building and that quirkiness is interesting.

The Kanmon strait with its fast current and large vessels coming and going, the ferry boat crosses quickly in only 5 minutes. You can have your bicycle on board and when you go up to the second-floor deck, you can enjoy the 360- degree scenery of the strait with its glittering water surface while feeling the comfortable sea breeze. Operates approximately every 20 minutes. A boat trip which takes only minutes, so make sure you take it all in. (Fare is 400 yen one way)
